The main way I had students use a blog was as a weekly reflection or preparation, rather than do a MS Word journal. They were given prompts (on most weeks) and often had to comment on several others' posts (their "Home Team" members, most often).

I intentionally did NOT comment to them because I wanted the blog to be their own work and that of their peers.

After a couple posts, I distributed and discussed what makes a helpful/meaningful comment (and the contrary), using anonymous student comments as examples. This really improved their future comments!

For their own professional development, have students create a blog that can be used for their teaching portfolio (if there is no other institutional alternative). Blogs also add to "traditional" websites, as well.
